On Saturday, July 13th, the DeKalb Sustainable Neighborhoods Initiative in the Columbia High School district will host a community event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Shoal Creek Park III, 3075 McAfee Road, Decatur, GA 30032. Community members will be serving hamburgers, hotdogs, salad and dessert while supplies last.

Invited guests include members of the South DeKalb police, Commissioner Larry Johnson, Commissioner Stan Watson, and Bettye Davis from One DeKalb. Play ball with them, partner with them in a game of spades or interview them at the storytelling corner. Come out and play! Get to know your neighbors, local leaders and build relationships.

This kick-off marks the establishment of the DeKalb Sustainable Neighborhoods Initiative steering committee in the Columbia High School Area. The steering committee is composed of residents, businesses and community groups dedicated to improving their neighborhood. The DeKalb Sustainable Neighborhoods Initiative (DSNI) is a program supported by DeKalb County and Emory University’s Center for Community Partnerships. It seeks to foster a collaborative, community-based approach to improving the quality of life in DeKalb neighborhoods. The Columbia Cluster, an area defined by the Columbia High School district, was selected this year to participate in DSNI.

The steering committee is working together to create a Quality of Life Plan for the cluster that will address the most pressing issues in the community, and outline the strategies for improvement over the next several years. As this requires input from a broad spectrum of stakeholders, the event aims to draw people out and engage them in the process. If you are interested in joining the steering committee or volunteering at events, please call

A Town Hall Meeting also hosted by the steering committee will be held on the following Saturday, July 20. Details TBA.
