STONE MOUNTAIN DeKalb parents and stakeholders will get a chance to speak directly to board members about their concerns at a special meet and greet on September 11.
The event, sponsored by the DeKalb County Council of PTAs will will take place at 6 p.m. at the Administrative & Instructional Complex (AIC) located at 1701 Mountain Industrial Blvd in Stone Mountain.
“The goal of this event is to give the parents, staff and community at large an up close and personal opportunity to meet their board representatives and engage in conversations related to education that are important to them in a fun, informal setting,” according to Dionne McGhee, Chair of the Council’s advocacy committee. “This board has been on the job for about six months, so this event will be a nice chance for the members to get feedback on how they’re doing and what the parents’ priorities are.”
McGhee said the event is not intended for the political pundits but for everyone who values public education and have a vested interest in its improvement.
Among the subjects open for discussion are how parents can partner with the schools to help their children perform well under the district’s new, more rigorous common core curriculum; school security; student discipline and ways to improve communication between parents and the schools.
“We’ll have refreshments, mix and mingle for about 30 minutes and then have break out sessions where parents will meet with the board members from their district,” McGhee said.
