Residents will get a chance to voice their opinions on the proposed cities of DeKalb and Stonecrest, and DeKalb’s CEO form of government at two town hall meetings this week.
State Sen. Ronald Ramsey is hosting a Sept. 24 Senate hearing at the Stonecrest Library, and DeKalb District 3 Commissioner Larry Johnson is hosting a town hall on the city of DeKalb on Sept. 26 at Southwest DeKalb High School.
The Senate hearing and town hall meeting are designed to discuss the pros and cons of the cityhood movement for south DeKalb County, and whether DeKalb should change its CEO form of government. They are the first meetings on cityhood that are independent of the groups pushing to form cities.
Ramsey, whose Senate District 43 includes Lithonia, will host the legislative hearing at 7 p.m. It will focus on the pre-filed Senate Bill 277, which would create a city of DeKalb; Senate Bill 278, which would create a city of Stonecrest; and an independent discussion on whether DeKalb’s CEO government should be replaced by an alternative system.
Johnson’s town hall takes place at 7 p.m.
One hour of Ramsey’s senate hearing will be devoted to citizen comments.
Ramsey said he is encouraging all citizens to come out to discuss the future of DeKalb County.
“It is important that we give all residents the chance to voice their opinion on the vital issues of whether to form new cities and/or change the existing form of county government,” Ramsey said.
Tuesday’s hearing will be attended by Sens. Steve Henson, District 90 and Gail Davenport, District 44; and House District 92 Rep. Tonya Peterson-Anderson.
Speakers will include Georgia Municipal Association representative Tom Gehl, Stonecrest Alliance president Jason Lary, and Lithonia Mayor Deborah Jackson. DeKalb County CEO Lee May has been invited.
Johnson says he wants to put all options on the table, explore where boundaries might fall and get community feedback.
The Stonecrest Library is at 3123 Klondike Road in Lithonia. Southwest DeKalb High School is at 2863 Kelly Chapel Road in Decatur.
