DECATUR Many metro residents are still looking for work despite a drop in Georgia’s unemployment rate to 8.7% from a high of 10% during the recession. But there’s help available.
Organizers are urging job candidates to attend the Career Expo at Mount Welcome Missionary Baptist Church Thursday Sept. 26 from 10a.m. to 2 p.m., 581 Parker Avenue, Decatur, GA 30032.
The Church is partnering with Georgia Department of Labor, Goodwill of North Georgia, The DeKalb Career Center and District 3 Commissioner Larry Johnson for the event.
Pastor Darryl Roberts says the event will draw between 25 and 30 employers, educational institutions and resource agencies that provide assistance to job seekers.
Employers will include Comcast Telesales; Avon; AFLAC Insurance; AARP; Care Master Medical Services; Primerica; Newell Recycling and the DeKalb Police Department.
“We’ll also have schools like Argosy University and Shorter University for those who want to further their training and increase their career options for the future,” said Roberts. “We want to meet the participants where they are in life.”
The Georgia Department of Labor and DeKalb Workforce Development will have their mobile units onsite with banks of computers available to job seekers.
Applicants who are ready for work now should bring plenty of résumés and be prepared to fill out company applications and interview for available jobs. Attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately to improve their opportunities for employment.
