Early voting got underway today with DeKalb voters casting ballots at three sites in DeKalb and at polling places throughout Georgia.
The advance voting polls opened at 7 a.m. and after a slow start, voting picked up around the lunch hour at the DeKalb Voter and Elections offices on Memorial Drive in Decatur.
Eddie Davis Jr. of Decatur was among the early voters and he was happy to vote in the hotly contested special election for sheriff. Davis said his pick was former DeKalb CEO Vernon Jones, who is one of with candidates seeking the seat.
“We got so much crime we need somebody to address it and reduce the number of repeat offendors,” he said moments after casting his vote in the special election for sheriff, the DeKalb School Board races, congress and other local and statewide races.
Gloria Harris of Decatur, who also voted Monday, said that whether residents come out early or not, every eligible voter should participate.
“We should take this voting opportunity seriously because we as a people are paying taxes and we need to be careful who we put in office,” she said.
Residents gave various reasons for voting early ranging from being “eager to get it done” to “avoiding election day lines.”
The polls are open weekdays 7 a.m, to 7 p.m. through May 12 when the number of advance voting precincts increase to six across the county. May 10 is the only Saturday voting date. On that date, the polls will open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
