State Rep. Billy Mitchell stays active, and it shows.

When he is not ushering legislations at the State Capitol with bi-parisan support, Mitchell might be hosting a the naming of bridge in honor of a late friend and public servant, or updating the DeKalb Democratic Party on Republican shenanigans at the capitol, bestowing a citation on an Eagle Scout, saying thanks to a long-serving pastor who is retiring, or co-hosting an Easter egg hunt.

No wonder he was voted Most Active State Legislator in the CrossRoadsNews 2012 Best of East Metro Readers Choice Award.

Leona Perry, who was one of the hundreds who picked Mitchell, said he got her vote because of all the things he does.

“He’ll do whatever you ask him to do,” she said, “and he is about the same, all the time. Some others, go up and go down.”

Perry, a fellow Democrat, said Mitchell always returned telephone calls.

“I just like him as a person,” she said. “He is as good as it goes.”

Mitchell, who represents House District 88 in Stone Mountain, has been a state legislator since 2002. Over that time, he has sponsored more than 44 bills.

He began public service in 1995 on the Stone Mountain City Council.

Among the legislations he sponsored or co-sponsored this year were legislation on school cheating, mortgage reform and the resolution to name the Ponce de Leon bridge in Stone Mountain in honor of the late Stone Mountain Mayor Chuck Burris.

Mitchell served with Burris on Stone Mountain City Council.

Mitchell said he was able to get so many bills passed with the support of the DeKalb Delegation and bi-partisan support.

He said he is deeply humbled to be voted Best State Legislator.

“It’s an honor that I don’t take lightly,” he said. “It gives me motivation to continue serving.”
