A number of volunteers who give of their time to their local Y’s will be honored Nov. 8 at the YMCA of Metro Atlanta’s annual volunteer recognition dinner at the Cobb Galleria Centre.

Melinda Sampang, the Rev. Dexter Rowland and Lamar Jones are being recognized for their service at centers in South DeKalb.

Sampang, an East Atlanta mother of four, is the YMCA Academies of South DeKalb’s 2010 Volunteer of the Year.

She is on her second year as parent volunteer at the center. She first became involved with the Y when she enrolled her oldest daughter into the preschool program.In addition to volunteering in the classrooms, she serves as co-chair for the parent advisory council and encourages other parents to get involved in their children’s education.

Rowland, who is pastor at New Piney Grove Baptist Church, is the South DeKalb Family YMCA’s Volunteer of the Year. He became involved with the Y during childhood swimming lessons. He lives in Decatur and is in his fourth year as a Y volunteer, serving as board chair and a member of the finance committee.

Jones is the East Lake Family Y’s 2010 Volunteer of the Year. He was introduced to the Y by a friend and became a volunteer in 2008. He is a board member and is involved with the Ask 10 Campaign.

Jones, who is president of Key Maintenance Supply Inc., is involved with the Partner With Youth annual campaign. He lives in Lithia Springs.
