Seniors flexing muscles at athletic competitions

Seniors will be golfing, swimming, and competing in tennis, basketball and dance competitions during the 2004 Senior Golden Olympics being held May 17-20 at various locations across the county.

The Olympics are among a number of activities being held across the county in celebration of Older Americans Month.

Seniors ages 50 to 77 will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals.

The opening ceremony and breakfast start at 8 a.m. on May 17 at Sugar Creek Golf Center, 2706 Bouldercrest Road.

Golfers will tee off at 9 a.m. The fee for the tournament is $21. For more information, call Sue Grable at 678-937-8929.

On May 18, seniors will take to the court for a tennis match at DeKalb Tennis Center, 1400 McConnell Drive in Decatur.

The 9 a.m. competition is free. Seniors will perfect their freestyle, butterfly and back stroke techniques at the swimming competition at 1 p.m. at Dynamo Pool, 3119 Shallowford Road in Chamblee. At 7:30 p.m., seniors will test their skills on the dance floor in an evening dance contest at the Marriott Century Center Hotel, 2000 Century Boulevard in Atlanta. Couples will tango, waltz and salsa to music from bygone eras. The formal affair is $15 per person and includes a seated dinner.

Senior basketball enthusiasts will hit 'em with their best shots at the 10 a.m. basketball competition, May 19 at Hamilton Center, 3262 Chapel St. in Scottdale, and pins will be flying as seniors take to the lanes for a 1 p.m. bowling contest at Suburban Lanes, 2619 N. Decatur Road in Decatur. The fee for the bowling tournament is $3.

The Olympics concludes on May 20 with a 10 a.m. track and field competition at Mason Mill Center, 1340-B McConnell Drive in Decatur.

Awards will be presented at the closing ceremony at 7 p.m. at Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur. Registration is $10 and includes a T-shirt, awards and closing ceremony dinner.
